History of Dunman Road . Tanjong Katong
Tanjong Katong is a residential area located in the east part of Singapore under the Marine Parade URA area. In Malay, Tanjong Katong means turtle point, Katong being a sea turtle which is an extinct species. Another meaning of this name is the rippling effect of a sea mirage since the area is near the shoreline, which provides a cool breeze from the ocean.
In the early 80s, the neighbourhood was a British settlement, and its boundaries stretched from East Coast Road up to Tanjong Rhu. The area was famous for beachside retreats and boathouses, but it now hosts some of the executive residential houses in the country.
In 1822, a marine yard was set aside by raffles which stretched from Deep Water Point to Sandy Point. The Chinese settlers that lived at this point were well compensated for moving, and by the 1860s, the area was full of boat yards.
Tanjong Katong was made a prime location for mansions and beautiful villas of the wealthy Portuguese, Chinese, Anglo-French and English professionals in the 90s and 20th century. These individuals developed the area by building some luxurious seaside resorts and manors from Katong Park to the East Coast. They also built strong business empires that resulted in some of the major landmarks like Kampong Amber, a Malay fishing village inhabited by Peranakans and fishermen, which was later eradicated to create room for economic developments.
Another major landmark that is present to date is Katong Post Office, which was opened in 1933 in a colonial house. Shanghai Chen Hin Dry Cleaning Co. and Katong News Agency are other shops that have existed for the longest time in the Tanjong Katong neighbourhood. However, residents faced flooding during the rainy days when Geyland overflowed to its brims. The flooding continued up to 1993, when the government deepened the river.
Today, Tanjong Katong runs from Mountbatten road to the East Coast and Siglap. It is one of the preferred locations for old, young residents and expatriates since it is conveniently positioned close to amenities of all kinds.
